Cellular reprogramming for cardiac regenerative medicine treats cardiovascular disease (CVD) through three methods: (1) in vitro reprogramming of cells like fibroblasts into cardiomyocytes by initiating cardiac development programs to provide a cell source for regeneration; (2) in vivo cardiac reprogramming using lineage transcription factors or microRNA manipulation to convert resident cardiac fibroblasts into cardiomyocytes in situ; (3) partial reprogramming of mature cardiomyocytes into a fetal state to restore function in senescent cells by temporarily reactivating nascent developmental programs.
