A 2016 review by dos Santos et al. of 25 neuroimaging studies concluded that oral administration of serotonergic psychedelics, including mescaline, psilocybin, and ayahuasca, produces excitatory effects in the frontolateral/frontomedial cortex and medial temporal lobe areas, which are central to cognitive functioning, self-awareness, emotional processing, and memory.
