The DSM-IV-TR criteria for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) define compulsions as repeated behaviors and mental actions that the patient is driven to follow according to self-set rigid rules to ease anxiety and reduce distress; these actions are not realistic, are clearly excessive, may be recognized as excessive by the patient, and may take over one hour a day.
