Pyruvate dehydrogenase kinases (PDK) 1 and 3 are over-expressed in cancer cells and primed pluripotent stem cells (PSCs), where they inhibit the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC) and redirect pyruvate away from the mitochondria into lactate.
