The fossil record of the Mormyroidea is limited to teeth of †Gymnarchus sp. from the late Eocene (37 Mya) in Egypt and remains of †Hyperopisus sp. from the Plio-Pleistocene (more recent than 5.3 Mya) in Lake Edward and the Semliki River in Congo.
