Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, in paragraph 17 of his Monadology, proposed a thought experiment known as 'Leibniz's mill,' which asks us to imagine a conscious system large enough to walk into and inspect, arguing that no matter how much one learns about the system's parts, one could never find anything to explain a perception.
