Red blood cells (RBC) in humans express only GLUT1 transporters and not the SVCT family of transporters; they recycle ascorbic acid (AA) by taking up dehydroascorbate (DHA) from circulation and immediately reducing it to AA inside the cell via glutaredoxin and reduced glutathione, as described by Padayatty and Levine (2016).
