In the Schaffer and Emerson (1964) study, researchers measured attachment development using three criteria: stranger anxiety (response to a stranger's arrival), separation anxiety (distress when separated from a carer and comfort needed upon return), and social referencing (the degree to which a child checks with a carer to determine how to respond to new stimuli).
