The staging system for allostatic load proposed by Fava and colleagues defines four stages: Stage 0 (euthymia, functional allostasis with optimal wellbeing), Stage 1 (allostatic load, elevated strain while still functioning), Stage 2 (allostatic overload, significant dysregulation with impaired functioning), and Stage 3 (clinical disorder or disease, where pathophysiology becomes evident).
