Obsessions in obsessive–compulsive disorder are defined as recurrent and persistent thoughts, impulses, or images that are experienced as intrusive and inappropriate, cause marked anxiety or distress, are not simply excessive worries about real-life problems, are attempted to be ignored, suppressed, or neutralized by the person, and are recognized by the person as a product of their own mind.
