The DSM-IV-TR specifies that for a diagnosis of an anxiety disorder, the disturbance must not be due to the direct physiological effects of a substance (such as a drug of abuse or medication) or a general medical condition (such as hyperthyroidism), and must not occur exclusively during a Mood Disorder, a Psychotic Disorder, or a Pervasive Developmental Disorder.
