The glymphatic system operates by allowing cerebrospinal fluid to flow into spaces around arteries, passing through aquaporin-4 (AQP4) water channels into brain tissues to mix with metabolic waste, and then moving out of brain tissues into the space surrounding veins for clearance through the lymphatic or circulatory system.
