The DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria for trauma-related disorders define persistent symptoms of increased arousal as the presence of two or more of the following: difficulty falling or staying asleep, irritability or outbursts of anger, difficulty concentrating, hypervigilance, or an exaggerated startle response.
