The American Psychiatric Association defines the diagnostic criteria for social anxiety disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR) as including the fear that an individual will act in a way or show anxiety symptoms that will be humiliating or embarrassing.
