The two groups of weakly electric fishes, mormyroids and gymnotiforms, originated at nearly the same time in evolutionary history, with similar time intervals passing between the whole genome duplication (WGD) at the base of the teleost radiation and the origins of novel myogenic electric organs in each lineage.
