The barostatic system regulates blood pressure through negative feedback: when blood pressure increases, baroreceptors in the carotid sinus are stretched, sending nerve traffic to the brainstem, which results in autonomic outflow that decreases heart rate and turns off the sympathetic nervous system to lower blood pressure.
