In a longitudinal study of nearly 7,000 Alameda County, California residents followed over 9 years, isolated men were 2.3 times more likely to die and isolated women were 2.8 times more likely to die compared to those with extensive social contacts, even after controlling for variables like smoking, alcohol consumption, and physical activity.
