Decentering is conceptually similar to the 'observing self' (Deikman, 1982; Fletcher and Hayes, 2005), the 'self-as-witness' (Damasio, 2010), and clinical constructs such as defusion or psychological distancing (Fletcher and Hayes, 2005; Ayduk and Kross, 2010).
