Early attempts to study multiple sub-systems within the cardiovascular system (Guyton et al., 1972) and other systems (Coleman and Randall, 1983) were modeled on electric circuit diagrams that summed individual measurements from separate experiments, failing to account for the transient dynamics and emergent non-linear behaviors of human physiology.
