Following the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) formed closer ties with Saudi Arabia's General Intelligence Directorate (GID) and Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to provide funding and covert assistance to the Mujahideen.
