Baseline glucocorticoid levels in blood tend to increase slowly as environmental conditions deteriorate, increasing allostatic load, until conditions become extreme, at which point glucocorticoid levels increase rapidly to level C, triggering facultative responses such as the Emergency Life History Stage (ELHS).
