To potentially lighten bioburden requirements for Mars, researchers must address three specific knowledge gaps: (1) understanding the additive and synergistic biocidal effects of Mars surface conditions, (2) developing a contaminant transport predictive model with a reasonable confidence level, and (3) improving the understanding of the distribution of habitable conditions on the surface or in the sub-surface of Mars.
