Robert Ader and Nicholas Cohen demonstrated in 1975 that immune responses in animals could be classically conditioned by pairing flavored water with an immunosuppressive drug, which caused the rats to develop a conditioned aversion to the water and subsequently experience immunosuppression when tasting the water alone.
