In August 1961, Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara created the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) to consolidate and coordinate the production of intelligence analysis by military services and to serve as the principal source of intelligence support to the Secretary of Defense, his staff, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and unified commands.
