To establish ethos, a writer should use credible, reliable sources and cite them properly, respect the reader by stating opposing positions accurately, establish common ground by acknowledging shared values, disclose personal interest or experience with the topic if appropriate, organize the argument in a logical manner, and proofread to avoid careless grammar mistakes.
