The study 'The value of energy storage in decarbonizing the electricity sector' by Fernando J. de Sisternes, Jesse D. Jenkins, and Audun Botterud (2016) found that in a Texas-like power system, the optimal share of wind and solar peaks when emissions limits are 60%–80% below current levels, reaching 40% of annual generation without energy storage and 51%–57% with significant energy storage. As emission limits tighten further to achieve deep decarbonization, the optimal share of renewables decreases to 19% without storage and 34% with substantial storage.
