Extremophiles are classified based on the physicochemical conditions in which they grow: psychrophiles (cold habitats), thermophiles and hyperthermophiles (high temperatures), acidophiles (pH less than 5.0), alkaliphiles (high pH), piezophiles (high pressure), halophiles (high salt concentrations), xerophiles (low water availability), oligotrophic microbes (low nutrient concentrations), radioresistant microbes (high radiation), and metallophiles (high metal or heavy metal concentrations).
