The COSPAR Panel on Planetary Protection (PPP) has a twofold purpose: to provide guidance to States to prevent the contamination of habitable environments by Earth-based biological material during space missions, and to provide guidelines to prevent the contamination of Earth's biosphere by returned extraterrestrial material.
