The energy penalty, defined as the increase in energy input per unit of energy output, for power plants with carbon capture and storage is significant: pulverized coal plants use 31 percent more energy, integrated gasification-combined cycle (IGCC) plants use 16 percent more energy, and combined-cycle natural gas plants use 17 percent more energy than their non-CCS counterparts.
