The American Psychological Association states that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is based on three fundamental principles: psychological problems are partly based on unhelpful thoughts; psychological problems are partly based on learned patterns of behavior; and people can learn better ways of coping with these thoughts and behaviors to improve their symptoms and function more effectively.
