The tax-loss harvesting process involves three steps: (1) portfolio managers identify investments with unrealized losses as potential opportunities, (2) the investments with unrealized losses are sold to realize the loss and provide a tax benefit, and (3) proceeds from the sale are reinvested into a similar investment to minimize the portfolio's tracking error.
