Randomized controlled trials indicate that supplementation with 10 to 45 mg of zinc per day in healthy elderly individuals improves immune function, including the restoration of thymulin activity, increased numbers of cytotoxic T lymphocytes, reduced numbers of activated T helper cells, increased natural killer cell cytotoxicity, and reduced incidence of infections.
