Health care providers should follow this procedure to address patient overindebtedness: (1) confidentially screen patients for overindebtedness as a risk factor while ensuring privacy protections, (2) refer patients to legal aid organizations that can negotiate lower debt levels, and (3) refer patients to public benefit programs to help reduce debt levels.
