Olfaction is an ideal sensory modality for modeling early consciousness because it is phylogenetically ancient and its routing is simpler than other modalities due to the absence of a thalamic relay, as supported by Merrick et al. (2014), Shepherd (2007), Baars (2013), and Keller (2014).
