The 'intermediate level fallacy' is a research strategy consisting of two steps: first, proposing an intermediate conceptual level (such as behavior, central workspace, information, enaction, or adaptive resonance) that is physically located but vague enough to suggest consciousness; second, redefining consciousness to appear similar to that intermediate level.
