To optimize near-natural forest planting for local conditions in Shanghai, researchers implemented a modified method: (1) create a mixed deciduous–evergreen community by simultaneously planting shade-tolerant evergreen broad-leaved species and light-demanding deciduous broad-leaved species, (2) use smaller individuals for the evergreen species and larger individuals for the deciduous species to form a multilayer vegetation structure.
