The Replicant project defines the freedoms associated with hardware as: the freedom to use the hardware for any purpose; the freedom to study how the hardware works and change it; the freedom to redistribute copies of the hardware and its design; and the freedom to distribute copies of modified versions. Access to the hardware design source is a precondition for these freedoms.
