The propositions of the PAO (Predictive Allostatic Optimization) include: change is the norm of nature; the natural environment is complex; realistic modeling of whole-organism behavior requires systematic attention to environmental complexity; the brain's complexity permits optimized engagement with environmental complexity, including anticipatory regulation; the brain serves as the central command for the organism to permit context-sensitive orchestrations of cross-system operations; brain-body communication is the rule; physiological mechanisms can be modeled as the integrated totality of brain-body interactions (the allostatic state); and health and disease exist along a continuum between allostatic optimality and impairment.
