To evaluate a child's readiness for a personal device, parents should assess the following: 1) Can the child regulate emotions and behavior around screen time and transitions? 2) Does the child show maturity in turning off screens at agreed-upon times? 3) Does the child understand rules regarding smartphone use? 4) Can the child discuss device rules calmly without emotional outbursts? 5) Does the child follow screen rules like not downloading without permission or keeping screens out of the bedroom? 6) Does the child demonstrate impulse control and track time spent on activities? 7) Is the child competent in interacting with peers and extracurricular activities? 8) Is the child responsible in other areas of life, such as doing chores, getting ready for school, making their own lunch, and transporting themselves via transit or bike? 9) Is the child academically connected and do they have a sense of identity in their school environment?
