The reproductive cycle of the marine annelid worm Platynereis dumerilii proceeds as follows: (1) sex cells mature under the full moon, (2) exactly 14 days later under the new moon and four hours after sunset, the worms float to the surface, (3) the worms synchronously release eggs and sperm, and (4) the worms die after spawning.
